If you are fixing up your garden for the season then you might see several different lawn weeds popping out. While these can be annoying there are a few different ways of getting rid of them so long as you know what they are. Five of the most common lawn weeds include:
- Henbit
This is a winter weed that is very easy to spot because of the purple flowers they have. These can often require a lot of water, so reducing the frequency of watering your lawn could lead to these weeds not surviving. To kill henbit, try a safe-to-use mineral herbicide. Iron-based products can be particularly effective if reapplied within 3 to 4 weeks.
- Nutsedge
Nutsedge much more closely resembles grass because of their v-shaped leaf blades. This weed is a bit harder to manage as it can root in many places. Hand removal is often the most effective approach to fully getting rid of it. For large infestations, you might need chemical control and specifically designed products.
- Shepherd’s purse
These plants tend to appear early in the season, they prefer cooler weather and are much more unlikely to appear in the heat. Much like with Henbit they are easy to remove if you’re using iron-based herbicide.
- Broadleaf Plantain
Broadleaf plantain is more common in the summer, and can sometimes require hand weeding as you will need to remove the roots. An Iron-based herbicide can often help limit this weed’s existence in your garden.
- Prostrate knotweed
This is a summer weed that can generally take well to even drier and more compacted soils. Hand removal can be one of the ways you can remove this, but sometimes chemical control is necessary against knotweed plants.
